| By Rob Conrad Location : Pakistan ( arab regions ) Habitat: Dry sand dunes and cliff sides of the desert. These large geckos need humid microclimates to shed their skin and burrow properly. Thus a minimum of 3-4 inches of sand is required, Cork bark and commercially made caves make the best hiding retreats for these reptiles, Multiple hiding places are mandatory for successful care. Humidity is maintained by misting lightly under their hiding shelters, 3-4 x a week. Always provide clean water. Lighting: We recommend florescent and incandescent lighting for maintaining optimal health. However these geckos are nocturnal and UV lighting is not mandatory, Heat may be added via under tank heaters or heat lamp, these geckos prefer a ground temp in the mid 80-f Range. Diet: Scincus consume crickets as a staple in captivity-daily , waxworms & Mealworms may be offered once or twice weekly. Breeding females may Be offered pinky mice once weekly and require more calcium intake. A natural calci sand is recommended. Calcium should be offered to breeding Animals in a small dish for them to consume at will. Always dust the crickets with a good cricket Calcium with d3 added. Multivitamins are not as important if crickets are gut loaded properly. Do to their delicate skin, teratoscincus should not be handled, when purchased as captive bred, Have an excellent personality rarely seen in the reptile trade. They are very inquisitive and smart geckos. And in our opinion great for beginners to expert keepers alike. Breeding: Takes place from may - September and is induced by a 2-month Cooling period . a proper cooling is done by giving these animals a 15 - 20 Degree drop in temperature. Eggs are laid in the sand and must be handled with care, as these gecko eggs are hard-shelled and easy to break. They must be placed into a deli -cup and resting on a plastic cap , not on your incubation medium. And will hatch in 80 - 100 days @ 84 f Good Luck !! |
